He was born on June 7, 1937, in Tallinn, Estonia. Järvi grew up in a musical family, and his father was a conductor and composer. He began his musical studies at the Tallinn Music High School, where he studied percussion and conducting. After completing his studies, he went on to study at the Leningrad Conservatory in Russia. Järvi began his career as a conductor in 1955, when he was appointed as the conductor of the Estonian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted many premieres of works by Swedish composers, including Anders Hillborg and Tobias Broström. Järvi's recordings have also received critical acclaim.
