The Scottish National Orchestra (SNO) is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1891, the orchestra has a rich history of performing and recording classical music, and has become one of the most respected orchestras in the world. The SNO was originally founded as the Scottish Orchestra, and was the first professional orchestra in Scotland. The orchestra was founded by a group of musicians who were passionate about bringing classical music to the people of Scotland. The first conductor of the orchestra was George Henschel, a German-born conductor and pianist who had previously conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, the SNO has had many notable conductors, including Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Alexander Gibson, and Neeme Järvi. The current principal conductor of the orchestra is Thomas Søndergård, who took over the position in 2018. The SNO has a core of around 70 musicians, and performs a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque period to contemporary works. The orchestra has a strong commitment to promoting Scottish music, and has commissioned and premiered many works by Scottish composers. One of the highlights of the SNO's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. The orchestra performed a specially commissioned piece by Scottish composer James MacMillan, which was broadcast live on television and radio. The SNO has also won many awards and accolades over the years. In 2012, the orchestra won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Ensemble, and in 2016, it won the BBC Music Magazine Award for Best Orchestral Recording for its recording of the music of Sir James MacMillan. In addition to its regular concert series in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the SNO has toured extensively throughout the world. The orchestra has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The SNO has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including violinist Nicola Benedetti, pianist Lang Lang, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The orchestra has also worked with many of the world's leading composers, including John Williams, James MacMillan, and Peter Maxwell Davies. In recent years, the SNO has also become known for its innovative and experimental programming. The orchestra has performed many contemporary works, and has collaborated with artists from other genres, such as jazz and rock. Overall, the Scottish National Orchestra is a world-class classical music ensemble with a rich history and a commitment to promoting Scottish music and culture. With its talented musicians and innovative programming, the SNO is sure to continue to be a major force in the world of classical music for many years to come.
