RussiaBirth:April 1, 1873 in Semyonovo, RussiaDeath:March 28, 1943 in Beverly Hills, CAPeriod:RomanticContemporaryGenre:ConcertoKeyboardVocalSergey Rachmaninov was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor who is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He was born on April 1, 1873, in Semyonovo, Russia, and grew up in a musical family. His mother was a pianist and his father was an amateur musician who played the French horn. Rachmaninov began piano lessons at the age of four with his mother, and by the age of nine, he was studying at the Moscow Conservatory. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He also showed an early talent for composition, and his first published work, a piano piece called "Aleko," was written when he was just 19 years old. In 1897, Rachmaninov premiered his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was met with mixed reviews. He was devastated by the criticism and fell into a deep depression, which lasted for several years. During this time, he sought the help of a therapist, who used hypnosis to help him overcome his depression and regain his confidence as a composer. In 1901, Rachmaninov premiered his Piano Concerto No. 2, which was a huge success and remains one of his most popular works. The concerto is known for its lush melodies and virtuosic piano writing, and it has been featured in numerous films and television shows. In addition to his piano concertos, Rachmaninov composed a wide range of other works, including symphonies, operas, choral music, and chamber music. His Symphony No. 2, which premiered in 1908, is considered one of his greatest works and is known for its sweeping melodies and lush orchestration. Rachmaninov was also a gifted conductor, and he served as the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1930 to 1934. During his time in Boston, he conducted many of his own works, as well as works by other composers. Despite his success as a composer and pianist, Rachmaninov was deeply affected by the political turmoil in Russia during the early 20th century. He left Russia in 1917, following the Bolshevik Revolution, and spent the rest of his life in exile. He settled in the United States, where he continued to compose and perform. Rachmaninov's later works, such as his Symphony No. 3 and his Piano Concerto No. 4, are less well-known than his earlier works, but they are still highly regarded by critics and audiences alike. His music is known for its lush harmonies, sweeping melodies, and virtuosic piano writing, and it continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world. Rachmaninov died on March 28, 1943, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 69. He left behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day.More....
