Born on March 4, 1944, in London, England, Lill showed an early aptitude for music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was a student of renowned pianist and teacher Dame Fanny Waterman. Lill's talent quickly became apparent, and he began to win numerous awards and competitions. In 1961, he won the prestigious Royal Overseas League Music Competition, which helped launch his career as a professional musician. He went on to win the Liszt Competition in Budapest in 1963, the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970, and the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1972. These victories brought Lill international recognition and established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, and Sir Charles Mackerras. Lill's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, and Schumann. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, and has recorded all of the composer's piano sonatas. In addition to his performances, Lill is also a respected teacher and has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the University of Hertfordshire. He has also served as a jury member for many international piano competitions, including the Leeds International Piano Competition and the Tchaikovsky Competition. Throughout his career, Lill has received numerous awards and honors. In 1978, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He was also awarded the Queen's Commendation for Excellence in 1996 and was made a Knight Bachelor in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2005. Lill's recordings have also received critical acclaim, and he has won numerous awards for his recordings of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra won the Gramophone Award for Best Concerto Recording in 1998.
