It was founded in 1928 as the Cardiff Station Orchestra, and was later renamed the Welsh Symphony Orchestra. In 1935, the orchestra became the BBC Welsh Orchestra, and in 1993 it was renamed the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The orchestra has had many notable conductors over the years, including Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Charles Groves, and Tadaaki Otaka. Its current principal conductor is Ryan Bancroft, who took over the position in 2020. The orchestra has performed at many prestigious venues around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Lincoln Center in New York. It has also performed at many major music festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Cheltenham Music Festival. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The orchestra performed the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen," as well as a medley of British music, including works by Elgar, Handel, and The Who. The orchestra has also won many awards over the years, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Orchestra in 2005 and the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording in 2012.
