He was born on September 18, 1893, in Sydney, Australia, to a family of musicians. His father, David Benjamin, was a violinist, and his mother, Bertha Porjesz, was a pianist. Arthur Benjamin showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of three. Benjamin's parents recognized his musical talent and provided him with formal training. He studied piano with Alfred Hill and composition with George Marshall-Hall at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music. In 1911, Benjamin won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition with Charles Villiers Stanford and piano with Tobias Matthay. During World War I, Benjamin served in the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot. After the war, he returned to London and resumed his musical career. He made his debut as a pianist in 1920, performing his own Piano Concerto No. 1 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The concerto was well-received, and Benjamin's career as a composer and pianist took off. Benjamin's compositions were influenced by a variety of musical styles, including classical, romantic, and modernist. He was particularly interested in the music of Debussy and Ravel and incorporated elements of their styles into his own works. Benjamin's music was characterized by its lyricism, harmonic richness, and rhythmic vitality. One of Benjamin's most famous works is his Jamaican Rumba, which he composed in 1938. The piece was inspired by a trip Benjamin took to Jamaica, where he heard the local music and was struck by its rhythmic energy. Jamaican Rumba became an instant hit and has since become a staple of the classical repertoire. Another notable work by Benjamin is his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which he composed in 1932. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo violin, with a lyrical and expressive second movement and a lively and energetic finale. The concerto has been performed by many of the world's leading violinists and is considered one of Benjamin's finest works. In addition to his compositions, Benjamin was also a respected conductor. He conducted many of his own works as well as those of other composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Benjamin was particularly interested in promoting the music of Australian composers and conducted many Australian premieres of works by composers such as Percy Grainger and Peter Sculthorpe. Benjamin's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1943 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1960. He was also awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne. Arthur Benjamin died on April 10, 1960, in London, England, at the age of 66. He left behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music that continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.More....
