He was the second of three children born to Russian-Jewish parents, who were both musicians. His father, Ruvin Heifetz, was a violinist and music teacher, while his mother, Anna, was a pianist. Jascha showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of three. His father was his first teacher, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. By the age of six, he was already performing in public, and at the age of seven, he gave his first full recital. In 1910, Jascha and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he continued his studies with some of the best violin teachers in the country. He also began performing with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, and by the age of 12, he had already made his debut as a soloist with the orchestra. In 1917, Jascha and his family fled Russia due to the political turmoil of the time and settled in the United States. He continued his studies with the renowned violin teacher Leopold Auer at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City (now known as the Juilliard School). He made his American debut in 1917, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. Jascha's career continued to flourish, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after violinists in the world. He made numerous recordings and performed in concerts all over the world. He was known for his technical brilliance, his impeccable intonation, and his ability to convey emotion through his playing. One of the highlights of Jascha's career was his performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic in 1929. The performance was so well-received that it was broadcast on the radio, making Jascha a household name. Jascha also had a successful career as a teacher. He taught at the University of Southern California from 1942 to 1959 and at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1962 to 1983. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as violinists themselves. Jascha received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1954, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the British government in 1962 and the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1970. Jascha continued to perform and teach until his death on December 10, 1987, at the age of 86. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest violinists of all time, and his recordings and performances continue to inspire and influence musicians today.More....
