PolandBirth:July 10, 1835 in Lublin, PolandDeath:March 31, 1880 in Moscow, RussiaPeriod:RomanticGenre:ChamberConcertoHenryk Wieniawski was a Polish violinist and composer who lived from 1835 to 1880. He was born in Lublin, Poland, to a family of musicians. His father, Tobiasz Pietruszka, was a violinist and composer, and his mother, Regina Wolff, was a pianist. Henryk showed an early talent for music, and his parents began teaching him the violin when he was just four years old. At the age of seven, Henryk and his family moved to Warsaw, where he continued his musical education. He studied with some of the best violin teachers in the city, including Stanisław Serwaczyński and Lambert Massart. By the age of nine, he was already performing in public concerts, and he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy. In 1848, when Henryk was just thirteen years old, he and his father went on a concert tour of Germany, Austria, and Russia. The tour was a great success, and Henryk was praised for his virtuosity and musicality. He continued to tour throughout Europe over the next few years, performing in cities such as Paris, London, and Vienna. In 1853, Henryk was appointed as the first violinist of the Court Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia. He remained in this position for two years, during which time he continued to perform in public concerts and compose music. In 1855, he left the orchestra and returned to Warsaw, where he became a professor at the Warsaw Conservatory. During his time at the conservatory, Henryk continued to compose music and perform in public concerts. He also became involved in the political and cultural life of Poland, which was then under Russian occupation. He was a member of the Polish National Committee, which was dedicated to promoting Polish culture and independence. Henryk's most famous works are his violin concertos, which are still performed and recorded today. His first violin concerto, in F-sharp minor, was composed in 1853 and premiered in Leipzig in 1855. The concerto is known for its technical difficulty and its beautiful melodies. Henryk's second violin concerto, in D minor, was composed in 1862 and premiered in St. Petersburg in 1863. This concerto is also known for its technical challenges and its lyrical themes. In addition to his violin concertos, Henryk composed many other works for violin, including études, caprices, and mazurkas. He also wrote music for piano and orchestra, as well as chamber music. His music is characterized by its virtuosity, its lyricism, and its Polish folk influences. Henryk Wieniawski died in Moscow in 1880, at the age of 44. He was buried in the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw, where his grave is still visited by music lovers from around the world. His legacy as a composer and violinist continues to inspire musicians today, and his music remains an important part of the classical repertoire.More....
