He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist who taught him how to play the instrument. Milstein's family moved to Moscow when he was ten years old, and he continued his musical education there. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of the famous violinist Leopold Auer. Milstein's talent continued to flourish under Auer's guidance, and he quickly became one of his star pupils. In 1921, Milstein made his debut as a soloist with the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra. He was just 16 years old at the time, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. Milstein continued to perform throughout Europe, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented violinists of his generation. In 1929, Milstein made his debut in the United States, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He quickly became a favorite of American audiences, and he began to tour extensively throughout the country. Milstein's performances were known for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after violinists in the world.
