He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a conductor and composer. From a young age, Fistoulari showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano and violin. He later went on to study at the Kiev Conservatory, where he received a degree in conducting. Fistoulari began his career as a conductor in the Soviet Union, where he worked with several orchestras, including the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled conductor, and his performances were highly praised by audiences and critics alike. In 1937, Fistoulari was invited to conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading conductors in Europe. He went on to conduct several other orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. One of Fistoulari's most notable performances was his 1954 recording of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" with the London Symphony Orchestra. The recording was highly acclaimed and is still considered one of the best recordings of the ballet to this day. Fistoulari also conducted several other notable recordings, including works by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. Throughout his career, Fistoulari received several awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1958, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music, and in 1963, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society. He was also made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in 1965. Fistoulari continued to conduct well into his later years, and he remained an influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on August 21, 1995.
