Léo Delibes was a French composer who lived from 1836 to 1891. He was born in Saint-Germain-du-Val, France, and was the son of a postman. Delibes showed an early interest in music and began studying at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 12. He studied under several prominent composers, including Adolphe Adam and François Bazin. Delibes began his career as a composer of operettas, which were popular in France during the mid-19th century. His first successful work was Deux sous de charbon, which premiered in 1856. He went on to compose several more operettas, including Le Roman de la Rose and La Cour du Roi Pétaud. In 1870, Delibes was appointed as the principal conductor at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. It was during this time that he began to focus more on composing ballets. His first ballet, La Source, premiered in 1866 and was well-received. However, it was his second ballet, Coppélia, that became his most famous work. Coppélia premiered in 1870 and was an instant success. The ballet tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a life-sized doll. The music is light and playful, with memorable melodies and catchy rhythms. The ballet has remained popular to this day and is often performed by ballet companies around the world. Delibes went on to compose several more ballets, including Sylvia and Lakmé. Sylvia premiered in 1876 and was based on a Greek myth. The ballet features some of Delibes' most beautiful music, including the famous "Pizzicato" duet. Lakmé premiered in 1883 and was set in India. The opera features the famous "Flower Duet," which has been used in several films and commercials. Delibes' music was known for its lightness and elegance. He was a master of melody and was able to create memorable tunes that were both catchy and sophisticated. His music was also influenced by his love of nature, and he often used bird calls and other natural sounds in his compositions. Delibes died in 1891 at the age of 55.
