He was born on January 9, 1942, in Bratislava, Slovakia. From a young age, Lenard showed a keen interest in music and began his musical education at the Bratislava Conservatory. He later went on to study at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he specialized in conducting. Lenard's career as a conductor began in 1967 when he was appointed as the conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was soon invited to conduct orchestras across Europe. In 1970, he made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which was followed by performances with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Lenard's most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1977. He held this position for over two decades and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Europe. During his tenure, Lenard conducted numerous recordings and performances, including the complete symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Lenard's reputation as a conductor continued to grow, and he was invited to conduct orchestras around the world. He made his debut in the United States in 1984 when he conducted the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He went on to conduct many other American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
