Armin Jordan was a Swiss conductor and pianist who was born on April 9, 1932, in Lucerne, Switzerland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Jordan began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He studied at the Lucerne Conservatory and later at the Zurich Conservatory, where he studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky. Jordan began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Switzerland. However, he soon realized that his true passion was conducting. In 1962, he made his debut as a conductor with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and was soon invited to conduct orchestras throughout Europe. One of Jordan's most notable performances was his 1979 debut with the Vienna State Opera. He conducted a production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" that was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. This performance launched Jordan's international career and he was soon in demand as a guest conductor with major orchestras around the world. Jordan was known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians and for his innovative interpretations of classical works. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Mozart, Beethoven, and Mahler. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by many modern composers. Throughout his career, Jordan received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1985, he was awarded the Prix de la Fondation de France for his work with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He was also awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recordings of Mahler's symphonies with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Jordan was the music director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande from 1985 to 1997. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in Europe. He also served as the principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1992 to 1997. Jordan's career was cut short when he died suddenly of a heart attack on September 20, 2006, at the age of 74. He was in the midst of conducting a performance of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Zurich Opera House when he collapsed on stage. His death was a great loss to the classical music world, and he is remembered as one of the greatest conductors of his generation.
