The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet composed by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky in 1889. The plot is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault. The ballet tells the story of Princess Aurora, who is cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse to prick her finger on a spindle and die on her 16th birthday. However, the good fairy Lilac Fairy intervenes and changes the curse so that Aurora will instead fall into a deep sleep for 100 years, until she is awakened by the kiss of a prince. The ballet is divided into three acts and six scenes. The first act introduces the characters and sets the stage for the curse. The second act features the famous "Rose Adagio," in which Aurora dances with four suitors and balances on pointe while holding a bouquet of roses. The third act features the wedding of Aurora and Prince Florimund, and the final scene shows the couple's triumph over Carabosse and their happily ever after. The Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia on January 15, 1890. It was choreographed by Marius Petipa, with additional choreography by Lev Ivanov. The original cast included Carlotta Brianza as Aurora and Pavel Gerdt as Prince Florimund. The music of The Sleeping Beauty is known for its lush melodies and intricate orchestration. Tchaikovsky composed a number of memorable themes, including the "Waltz of the Flowers" and the "Panorama." The ballet also features a number of character dances, including a Spanish dance, a Hungarian dance, and a Russian dance. The Sleeping Beauty is known for its grandeur and spectacle. The sets and costumes are elaborate and colorful, and the choreography is intricate and demanding. The ballet requires a large cast, including a corps de ballet, soloists, and character dancers. The Sleeping Beauty has become one of the most beloved and enduring ballets of all time. It has been performed by ballet companies around the world, and has inspired countless adaptations and interpretations. Its enduring popularity is a testament to Tchaikovsky's masterful score and Petipa's groundbreaking choreography.
