Artist Info
The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Founded in 1949, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and celebrated orchestras in Central Europe. The orchestra was established shortly after World War II, when the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra was divided into two separate ensembles: the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. The latter was founded by the conductor Ľudovít Rajter, who served as its first artistic director. Over the years, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra has been led by many distinguished conductors, including Ladislav Slovák, Libor Pešek, and Emmanuel Villaume. The orchestra has also collaborated with numerous renowned soloists, such as violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, pianist Martha Argerich, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The orchestra's repertoire is diverse, ranging from classical works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms to contemporary compositions by living composers. The orchestra has also performed many works by Slovak composers, including Eugen Suchoň, Ján Cikker, and Peter Breiner. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1993 World Ice Hockey Championships in Munich, Germany. The orchestra played the Slovak national anthem and other patriotic pieces, which helped to create a festive atmosphere for the event. The orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1970, it was awarded the title of "National Ensemble" by the Slovak Ministry of Culture. In 1991, it was awarded the "Golden Plaque" by the International Music Council in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the world of classical music. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra has also recorded extensively. Its recordings have been released on many major labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Naxos, and Supraphon. Despite its many achievements, the orchestra has faced some challenges over the years. In the 1990s, it experienced financial difficulties due to a lack of government funding. However, it has managed to overcome these challenges and continues to thrive today. In recent years, the orchestra has embarked on several international tours, performing in countries such as Japan, China, and the United States. These tours have helped to raise the orchestra's profile and introduce its music to new audiences around the world. Today, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in Central Europe. Its commitment to excellence and its dedication to preserving and promoting the rich musical heritage of Slovakia have made it a true cultural treasure.More....
