Oliver von Dohnanyi began his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the piano and the violin. He later studied conducting at the Vienna Music Academy and the Salzburg Mozarteum. He also attended masterclasses with renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan. Dohnanyi's career as a conductor began in 1980 when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1986, Dohnanyi was appointed as the principal conductor of the Frankfurt Opera, a position he held until 1991.
