He was born on 14th May 1942 in Bratislava, Slovakia. From a young age, Stankovsky showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began his musical education at the Bratislava Conservatory, where he studied violin and conducting. After completing his studies, Stankovsky began his career as a violinist with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. However, his true passion was conducting, and he soon began to focus on this aspect of music. In 1970, he was appointed as the conductor of the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During his tenure with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stankovsky gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor. He also worked tirelessly to promote Slovakian music, commissioning new works and championing the works of local composers. In 1982, Stankovsky left the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra to pursue a career as a freelance conductor. He also conducted the Berlin Philharmonic in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which was broadcast live on television and received widespread acclaim.
