He was born on June 15, 1843, in Bergen, Norway, to a musical family. His mother, Gesine Hagerup, was a pianist and his father, Alexander Grieg, was a merchant and a consul. Edvard was the fourth of five children, and he showed an early interest in music, learning to play the piano at a young age. Grieg's musical education began at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons from his mother. He later studied with several other teachers, including the Norwegian composer and pianist Ole Bull. In 1858, at the age of 15, Grieg went to study at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. There, he studied piano with Ignaz Moscheles and composition with Carl Reinecke. He also became friends with several other composers, including Antonín Dvořák and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. After completing his studies in Leipzig, Grieg returned to Norway and began to establish himself as a composer and pianist. He gave concerts throughout Norway and Europe, and his music began to gain recognition. In 1867, he married his cousin, Nina Hagerup, who was also a singer. The couple had one child, a daughter named Alexandra. Grieg's music is characterized by its strong Norwegian identity and its use of folk melodies and rhythms. He was deeply influenced by the Norwegian landscape and culture, and many of his works are inspired by the mountains, fjords, and folk traditions of his homeland. Some of his most famous works include the Piano Concerto in A minor, the Peer Gynt suite, and the Holberg Suite. The Piano Concerto in A minor, which Grieg composed in 1868, is one of his most popular works. It is a virtuosic piece that showcases the pianist's technical skill and musical sensitivity. The concerto is notable for its use of Norwegian folk melodies, which are woven into the fabric of the music. The second movement, in particular, is based on a Norwegian folk song called "Jeg elsker deg" ("I love you"). The Peer Gynt suite, which Grieg composed between 1874 and 1875, is a collection of pieces that were originally written as incidental music for a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The suite includes some of Grieg's most famous works, including "Morning Mood," "In the Hall of the Mountain King," and "Solveig's Song." The music is evocative of the Norwegian landscape and the characters in the play, and it has become a staple of the classical repertoire. The Holberg Suite, which Grieg composed in 1884, is a tribute to the Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. The suite is written in the style of a Baroque dance suite, but it incorporates Norwegian folk melodies and rhythms. The music is elegant and refined, and it showcases Grieg's skill as a composer of chamber music. In addition to his compositions, Grieg was also a respected pianist and conductor. He gave concerts throughout Europe and was known for his passionate and expressive performances. He was also a champion of Norwegian music and culture, and he worked to promote the music of other Norwegian composers. Grieg's health began to decline in the 1890s, and he suffered from several illnesses, including a heart condition. He continued to compose, however, and he completed his last work, the String Quartet in G minor, in 1907. He died on September 4, 1907, in Bergen, Norway, at the age of 64. Today, Grieg is remembered as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era.More....
