Born on January 8, 1940, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Tomsic began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the Ljubljana Academy of Music with Anton Hribar and later with Guido Agosti in Italy. Tomsic's career as a concert pianist began in the 1960s, when she won several international competitions, including the Concorso Busoni in Italy and the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in France. These victories launched her onto the international stage, and she soon became known for her powerful and expressive playing. Throughout her career, Tomsic has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, and Zubin Mehta. One of Tomsic's most memorable performances was her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1977, where she played a program of works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt to critical acclaim. The New York Times praised her "brilliant technique, deep musicality, and a sense of poetry that is rare in a pianist of any age." Tomsic has also made numerous recordings throughout her career, including a highly acclaimed cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas for the Naxos label. Her recordings of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Brahms have also received widespread praise for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. In addition to her performing career, Tomsic has also been a dedicated teacher, serving on the faculty of the Ljubljana Academy of Music for many years. In 1993, she was awarded the Prešeren Award, Slovenia's highest cultural honor, for her outstanding achievements in music.
