United KingdomBirth:April 15, 1924 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, EnglandDeath:October 2, 2016 in London, EnglandGenre:ConcertoOrchestralNeville Marriner was a renowned British conductor and violinist who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on April 15, 1924, in Lincoln, England, Marriner showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He received his formal education at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist and conductor, Frederick Thurston. After completing his studies, Marriner began his career as a violinist, playing with various orchestras in London. In 1952, he joined the London Symphony Orchestra as a second violinist, where he remained for ten years. During this time, he also played with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which he later founded. In 1959, Marriner founded the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, a chamber orchestra that quickly gained recognition for its innovative and dynamic performances. The orchestra's name was inspired by the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, where the ensemble gave its first concert. Marriner served as the orchestra's music director for over four decades, during which time he led the ensemble in numerous recordings and performances around the world. Under Marriner's leadership, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields became one of the most respected and sought-after chamber orchestras in the world. The ensemble's recordings of Mozart's symphonies and concertos, in particular, received critical acclaim and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation for excellence. Marriner's approach to conducting was characterized by his attention to detail, his sensitivity to the nuances of the music, and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. In addition to his work with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Marriner was also a sought-after guest conductor, leading orchestras around the world in performances of both classical and contemporary repertoire. He conducted the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others. Marriner's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1979, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music, and in 1985, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the Queen in 2015, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a British citizen. Marriner's legacy as a conductor and musician continues to be felt in the world of classical music today. His recordings with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields remain some of the most beloved and influential interpretations of classical repertoire, and his approach to conducting has inspired generations of musicians and conductors. Marriner passed away on October 2, 2016, at the age of 92, but his contributions to the world of classical music will continue to be celebrated for years to come.More....
