George Malcolm was a renowned classical music artist who was born on February 28, 1917, in London, England. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Malcolm showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of three. Malcolm's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London when he was just 14 years old. He studied under the tutelage of Harold Darke and Herbert Howells, two of the most prominent composers and music educators of the time. Malcolm's career as a musician began in earnest in the 1940s when he became the organist and choirmaster at Westminster Cathedral. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest organists in the country and was in high demand as a performer and recording artist. One of Malcolm's most significant achievements was his work as a harpsichordist. He was one of the first musicians to revive interest in the harpsichord as a solo instrument, and he played a crucial role in the development of the early music movement in the UK. Malcolm's performances of Baroque music on the harpsichord were renowned for their clarity, precision, and technical brilliance. Malcolm's career as a recording artist was also highly successful. He recorded extensively for the Decca label, and his recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Handel's Harpsichord Suites are still considered some of the finest interpretations of these works. Malcolm's career was not without its challenges, however. He suffered from a severe case of stage fright, which made performing in public a daunting prospect. Despite this, he continued to perform and record throughout his career, and his legacy as one of the greatest classical music artists of the 20th century is secure. Malcolm's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1965, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He was also awarded the Queen's Medal for Music in 1971, and in 1980 he was made a Knight Bachelor. Malcolm continued to perform and record until his death on October 10, 1997, at the age of 80. His legacy as a musician and harpsichordist continues to inspire new generations of classical music artists, and his recordings remain some of the most beloved and influential in the classical music canon.
