Born on January 7, 1922, in Marseille, France, Rampal was the son of a flutist and a pianist. He began playing the flute at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Rampal studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he won first prize in flute in 1944. He then went on to study with Marcel Moyse, one of the most renowned flute teachers of the time. Moyse was a major influence on Rampal's playing style and helped him develop his signature sound, which was characterized by its clarity, precision, and expressiveness. In the early years of his career, Rampal played with a number of orchestras in France, including the Paris Opera and the Lamoureux Orchestra. He also began to establish himself as a soloist, performing in recitals and concerts throughout Europe. Rampal's breakthrough came in 1956, when he made his debut in the United States. He performed with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. This led to a series of engagements in the United States, including performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rampal continued to perform and record extensively. He collaborated with a number of other musicians, including pianist Robert Veyron-Lacroix and harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock. He also worked with a number of composers, including Francis Poulenc and Jean Francaix, who wrote pieces specifically for him. In addition to his work as a performer, Rampal was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatory and the Salzburg Mozarteum, and he also gave master classes throughout the world. Many of his students went on to become successful flutists in their own right. Rampal's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1962 and was promoted to Officer in 1978. He also received the Grand Prix du Disque on several occasions and was awarded the National Order of Merit in 1986. Rampal continued to perform and record well into his later years. He died on May 20, 2000, at the age of 78. His legacy as one of the greatest flutists of all time lives on through his recordings and the many students he taught over the course of his career.More....
