I Solisti Veneti is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1959 by Claudio Scimone, an Italian conductor and musicologist. The ensemble is based in Padua, Italy, and is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, as well as its recordings of lesser-known works by composers such as Antonio Vivaldi and Tomaso Albinoni. Scimone founded I Solisti Veneti with the goal of creating a chamber orchestra that would specialize in the performance of Baroque music on period instruments. The ensemble's name, which means "The Venetian Soloists," reflects its origins in the Veneto region of Italy, where Scimone was born and raised. The ensemble's early years were marked by a series of successful performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" in 1969. This recording, which featured the violinist Piero Toso as soloist, helped to establish I Solisti Veneti as one of the leading Baroque ensembles of its time. Over the years, I Solisti Veneti has collaborated with a number of prominent soloists and conductors, including the violinist Salvatore Accardo, the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and the conductor Herbert von Karajan. The ensemble has also performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to its performances and recordings, I Solisti Veneti has also been recognized with a number of awards and honors. In 1982, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Vivaldi's "Concerti per fagotto," and in 1991, it received the Diapason d'Or for its recording of Albinoni's "Concerti a cinque." In 2003, Scimone and I Solisti Veneti were awarded the prestigious Antonio Vivaldi Prize by the city of Venice in recognition of their contributions to the performance and promotion of Vivaldi's music. Despite the passing of Scimone in 2018, I Solisti Veneti continues to perform and record under the direction of its current conductor, Claudio Osele. The ensemble's commitment to the performance of Baroque and Classical music on period instruments remains as strong as ever, and its recordings and performances continue to be celebrated by audiences and critics alike.
