Baldassare Galuppi was a prominent Italian composer of the Baroque and Classical periods. He was born on October 18, 1706, in the city of Burano, which is located in the Venetian Lagoon. Galuppi was the son of a barber and a seamstress, and he grew up in a modest household. Despite his humble beginnings, Galuppi showed an early aptitude for music, and he began studying with the organist and composer Antonio Lotti at the age of 14. Galuppi's musical education was extensive, and he studied with several other prominent composers of the time, including Giovanni Battista Martini and Francesco Gasparini. He also worked as a church organist and composer in Venice, where he gained a reputation for his skill and creativity. In 1737, Galuppi was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti, one of the most prestigious musical institutions in Venice. This position allowed him to compose and perform music for a wide range of audiences, including the nobility and the general public. Galuppi's early works were heavily influenced by the Baroque style, but he gradually began to incorporate elements of the emerging Classical style into his compositions. He was particularly known for his operas, which were popular throughout Europe during his lifetime. Galuppi composed more than 100 operas over the course of his career, many of which were performed in major cities such as London, Vienna, and St. Petersburg. One of Galuppi's most famous operas is Il filosofo di campagna, which was first performed in Venice in 1754. The opera tells the story of a philosopher who leaves the city to live in the countryside, where he encounters a variety of colorful characters. The music is characterized by its lively rhythms and catchy melodies, and it was a huge success with audiences in Venice and beyond. In addition to his operas, Galuppi also composed a wide range of other works, including sacred music, chamber music, and keyboard music. Galuppi's keyboard music was influential in the development of the Classical style, and it was studied and performed by many of the leading composers of the time. Galuppi's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1748, he was forced to flee Venice after a dispute with the city's powerful patrician class. He spent several years working in London, where he composed music for the King's Theatre and other venues. Galuppi's time in London was highly productive, and he composed some of his most famous works during this period, including the opera Artaserse and the keyboard sonatas Op. 1. Galuppi returned to Venice in 1751, where he resumed his position at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti. He continued to compose and perform music until his death in 1785.
