He was born on September 3, 1695, in Bergamo, Italy, to a family of musicians. His father, Andrea Locatelli, was a cellist and composer, and his mother, Caterina Scacchi, was a singer. Pietro showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at a young age. Locatelli's musical education began in Bergamo, where he studied with the local violinist and composer Giovanni Battista Martinelli. He then moved to Rome, where he studied with Arcangelo Corelli, one of the most famous violinists and composers of the time. Corelli's influence can be heard in Locatelli's music, which is characterized by its virtuosity and elegance. In 1723, Locatelli moved to Amsterdam, where he spent the rest of his life. He quickly established himself as a leading violinist and composer in the city's thriving musical scene. He performed regularly in public concerts and private salons, and his music was widely admired by his contemporaries. Locatelli's most famous work is his set of 12 violin concertos, Op. 3, published in 1733. These concertos are notable for their technical difficulty and innovative use of harmony and form. They are also notable for their programmatic elements, which depict scenes from nature and mythology. For example, the third concerto, "Il labirinto armonico" (The Harmonic Labyrinth), is a musical depiction of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Locatelli's other works include sonatas for violin and continuo, chamber music, and vocal music. His music is characterized by its virtuosity, expressiveness, and originality. He was also known for his use of scordatura, a technique in which the violin's strings are tuned differently than usual, which allowed him to create new and unusual sounds. Locatelli was also a respected teacher and wrote several treatises on music theory and performance. His most famous treatise, L'arte del violino (The Art of the Violin), was published in 1733 and is still studied by violinists today. Locatelli died in Amsterdam on March 30, 1764, at the age of 68. He was buried in the city's Westerkerk, where his tombstone bears the inscription "Petrus Locatelli, Musices Artifex" (Pietro Locatelli, Artisan of Music). His music continued to be performed and admired in the decades and centuries after his death, and he is now recognized as one of the most important composers of the Baroque era.More....
