Role:ConductorPeriod:BaroqueClassicalGenre:ConcertoOrchestralJanos Rolla was a Hungarian violinist and conductor who was born on June 14, 1945, in Budapest, Hungary. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Hungarian State Opera. Rolla began playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Rolla studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he was a student of Ferenc Rados and Zoltan Kodaly. He graduated with honors in 1967 and went on to become a member of the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the concertmaster of the orchestra in 1971. In addition to his work with the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, Rolla was also a founding member of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in 1963. The orchestra was made up of young musicians who were dedicated to performing chamber music at the highest level. Rolla served as the orchestra's concertmaster and later became its conductor. Under Rolla's leadership, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra became one of the most respected chamber orchestras in the world. The orchestra toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and performed with some of the most renowned soloists of the time, including Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Rolla was known for his exceptional musicianship and his ability to bring out the best in his fellow musicians. He was a demanding conductor who expected nothing but the best from his orchestra, but he was also known for his kindness and generosity. Rolla's career was marked by many highlights, including his performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he conducted the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in a performance of the Hungarian national anthem. He also conducted the orchestra in a performance at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Rolla was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1983, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural honor. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary in 1995. Rolla continued to perform and conduct until his death on June 16, 2021, at the age of 76. He was remembered by his colleagues and fans as a true master of his craft, a dedicated musician, and a kind and generous human being. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired throughout his career.More....
