Michael Haydn was a prominent classical music composer who lived during the 18th century. He was born on September 14, 1737, in Rohrau, Austria, to a musical family. His father, Mathias Haydn, was a wheelwright and amateur musician, while his mother, Maria Koller, was a cook. Michael was the younger brother of the famous composer Franz Joseph Haydn, who was also a significant influence on his musical career. Michael Haydn showed an early interest in music and began his musical education at a young age. He received his first music lessons from his father and later studied with the choir director of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. In 1757, he joined the choir of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter in Salzburg, where he served as a chorister and later as a violinist. In 1763, Michael Haydn was appointed as the court musician and composer for the Archbishop of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo. He held this position for over 40 years and composed a vast amount of music during this time. His works include symphonies, chamber music, sacred music, and operas. One of Michael Haydn's most significant works is his Requiem in C minor, which he composed in 1771. This piece was written in memory of the Archbishop's mother and is considered one of the most beautiful and moving requiems of the classical period. Another notable work is his Symphony No. 25 in G major, which was composed in 1786. This symphony is known for its lively and energetic melodies and is considered one of Michael Haydn's most popular works. Michael Haydn was also known for his chamber music compositions, which include string quartets, trios, and duets. His String Quartet No. 1 in C major is a particularly notable work and is considered one of the finest examples of classical chamber music. In addition to his compositions, Michael Haydn was also a respected music teacher. He taught music to several notable students, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was a close friend of his brother Franz Joseph Haydn. Mozart held Michael Haydn in high regard and even dedicated six string quartets to him. Michael Haydn's musical career was cut short by his death on August 10, 1806, in Salzburg. He was buried in the St. Peter's Cemetery in Salzburg, where his grave can still be visited today. In conclusion, Michael Haydn was a significant figure in the classical music world and made significant contributions to the genre during his lifetime. His compositions, which include symphonies, chamber music, and sacred music, are still performed and admired today. His legacy as a composer and music teacher continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
