Bournemouth Sinfonietta is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1968 in Bournemouth, England. The ensemble was established by a group of local musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra that would perform classical music in the region. The founding members of the ensemble included musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble's first conductor was Richard Studt, who led the group for over a decade. Under his leadership, the ensemble gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The ensemble's repertoire included works by both classical and contemporary composers, and it often collaborated with soloists and other ensembles. Over the years, the ensemble has had many notable members, including violinist Tasmin Little, who served as the ensemble's leader from 1988 to 1990. Other notable members have included cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, pianist Joanna MacGregor, and conductor Marin Alsop. One of the highlights of the ensemble's early years was its performance at the 1973 Proms, where it played a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. The ensemble also performed at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where it played a program of British music. In 1991, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Chamber Ensemble. This award recognized the ensemble's outstanding contributions to the field of classical music and its commitment to excellence in performance. Throughout its history, the ensemble has collaborated with many notable soloists and conductors. In 1993, the ensemble performed with pianist Stephen Hough, who played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The ensemble has also worked with conductors such as Simon Rattle, Andrew Litton, and Yan Pascal Tortelier. In addition to its performances, the ensemble has also been involved in educational outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with local schools and community groups to promote classical music and to provide opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills. In 1999, the ensemble merged with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to form the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The new organization continued to perform under the leadership of Marin Alsop, who became the first female conductor of a major British orchestra. Today, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus continues to perform throughout the UK and internationally. The ensemble's commitment to excellence in performance and its dedication to promoting classical music continue to be a hallmark of its work.
