The Waynflete Singers is a classical music ensemble based in Winchester, England. Founded in 1961 by conductor David Hill, the group has become one of the most respected and accomplished choirs in the United Kingdom. David Hill, who was then a music teacher at Winchester College, founded the Waynflete Singers with the aim of creating a high-quality choir that could perform a wide range of choral music. The group was named after William of Waynflete, the founder of Winchester College, and the first performance was held in the college chapel in December 1961. Over the years, the Waynflete Singers has attracted a diverse group of singers, ranging from students and teachers to professionals and amateurs. The group has also worked with a number of renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir David Willcocks, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Emma Kirkby. One of the highlights of the Waynflete Singers' early years was their performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in 1964. The group was joined by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Chorus, and the performance was conducted by Meredith Davies. The concert was a great success, and it helped to establish the Waynflete Singers as a major force in the British choral scene. In the years that followed, the Waynflete Singers continued to perform a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The group also began to tour more extensively, performing in venues across the UK and Europe. One of the Waynflete Singers' most notable performances was their 1985 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The group was joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Chorus, and they performed a program of works by Vaughan Williams, including his Sea Symphony and Dona Nobis Pacem. The concert was a great success, and it helped to cement the Waynflete Singers' reputation as one of the UK's leading choirs. In addition to their performances, the Waynflete Singers has also been recognized for their recordings. The group has released a number of albums over the years, including a highly acclaimed recording of Handel's Messiah in 1990. The recording, which was conducted by David Hill and featured soloists including Emma Kirkby and Anthony Rolfe Johnson, was praised for its clarity and precision. The Waynflete Singers has also been recognized with a number of awards and honors over the years. In 1994, the group was awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony. The group has also been invited to perform at a number of high-profile events, including the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. Today, the Waynflete Singers continues to be a vibrant and active ensemble, performing a wide range of choral music and collaborating with some of the world's leading musicians. The group remains committed to its founding principles of excellence and diversity, and it continues to inspire audiences with its beautiful and powerful performances.
