United KingdomGenre:ChoralThe Bournemouth Symphony Chorus is a classical music ensemble based in Bournemouth, England. Founded in 1910, the chorus has a rich history of performing choral works from a variety of composers, including Handel, Mozart, and Verdi. The Bournemouth Symphony Chorus was founded by Sir Dan Godfrey, who was the conductor of the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra at the time. The chorus was originally made up of members of the Bournemouth Municipal Choir, but it quickly grew in size and popularity. In 1913, the chorus performed its first major work, Handel's Messiah, to great acclaim. Over the years, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus has had many members, but some of its most notable members include its current conductor, Gavin Carr, and former conductors such as Roy Massey and Hilary Davan Wetton. The chorus has also had many distinguished soloists perform with them, including Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Thomas Allen, and Bryn Terfel. One of the highlights of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus's history was its performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1961. The performance was conducted by Sir John Barbirolli and featured soloists such as Joan Sutherland and Carlo Bergonzi. The performance was so well-received that it was recorded and released as an album, which went on to win a Grammy Award. In addition to its performances of major choral works, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus has also collaborated with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on many occasions. One of the most notable collaborations was the performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 2008. The performance, which featured over 500 performers, was conducted by Marin Alsop and was widely praised for its energy and passion. The Bournemouth Symphony Chorus has also won many awards over the years. In 2010, the chorus was awarded the prestigious Gramophone Award for its recording of Elgar's The Kingdom. The recording, which was conducted by David Hill, was praised for its clarity and emotional depth. Overall, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus has a long and distinguished history of performing choral works to the highest standards. With its talented members and dedicated conductor, the chorus continues to delight audiences with its beautiful and moving performances.More....
