Born on September 21, 1874, in Cheltenham, England, Holst was the son of a professional musician and was exposed to music from an early age. He began playing the piano and violin as a child and later learned to play the trombone, which became his primary instrument. Holst attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition with Charles Villiers Stanford and became friends with fellow composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. After completing his studies, Holst worked as a music teacher and organist in various schools and churches throughout England. Holst's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of Wagner and Strauss, but he later developed a unique style that blended elements of English folk music, Hindu music, and medieval music. His most famous work, "The Planets," was composed between 1914 and 1916 and is a suite of seven movements, each named after a planet in the solar system. The piece is known for its use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms and its vivid depictions of the planets. In addition to "The Planets," Holst composed a number of other works that are still performed today. His choral work, "The Hymn of Jesus," is a setting of a text from the apocryphal Acts of John and is known for its use of complex rhythms and harmonies. Holst also wrote several operas, including "Savitri" and "The Perfect Fool," as well as a number of chamber works and songs. Holst's music was not always well-received during his lifetime, and he struggled to gain recognition as a composer. However, his works have since become staples of the classical repertoire and are widely performed and recorded. Holst died on May 25, 1934, at the age of 59, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and influential composers of the 20th century.More....
