Born on May 1, 1913, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Süsskind showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He received his formal music education at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. After completing his studies, Süsskind began his career as a pianist, performing in various concerts and recitals across Europe. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in conducting, and he began to focus on this aspect of music. In 1938, he made his debut as a conductor with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and his performance was well-received by both the audience and critics. Süsskind's career as a conductor took off, and he went on to conduct some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He was also the principal conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra from 1946 to 1952, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1956 to 1965. One of the highlights of Süsskind's career was his association with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure as the principal conductor, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in the world, and his performances were highly acclaimed by both the audience and critics. He also introduced many new works to the orchestra's repertoire, including works by contemporary composers such as Benjamin Britten and Igor Stravinsky. Süsskind was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded many works with various orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Some of his most notable recordings include Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. In addition to his work as a conductor, Süsskind was also a respected music educator. He taught at various institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University of Toronto. He was also a guest lecturer at many universities and music schools around the world. Süsskind's contributions to the world of music were recognized with many awards and honors. In 1965, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors, for his contributions to Canadian music. He was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1971, and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972. Sadly, Süsskind's career was cut short when he passed away on March 25, 1980, at the age of 66. However, his legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and taught throughout his career. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, whose passion for music and dedication to his craft inspired generations of musicians.More....
