Le nozze di Figaro, also known as The Marriage of Figaro, is an opera buffa in four acts composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and is based on the play La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais. The opera was composed in 1786 and premiered on May 1 of the same year at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The plot of the opera revolves around the wedding day of Figaro, the valet of Count Almaviva, and his fiancée Susanna, who is the maid of Countess Almaviva. The Count, who has a reputation for philandering, is determined to seduce Susanna before her wedding day. However, Figaro and Susanna are determined to outwit the Count and expose his infidelity. The opera is divided into four acts, each with its own set of movements. The first act introduces the characters and sets up the plot, while the second act focuses on the Count's attempts to seduce Susanna. The third act is the climax of the opera, with Figaro and Susanna's plan to expose the Count's infidelity, and the fourth act is the resolution, with the Count repenting and the couples reconciling. One of the characteristics of Le nozze di Figaro is its use of ensemble singing, with many of the arias and duets featuring multiple singers. The opera also features a number of comedic moments, particularly in the interactions between Figaro and the Count. The music is characterized by its lightness and playfulness, with Mozart using a variety of musical styles to reflect the different moods of the opera. Le nozze di Figaro was an immediate success and has remained one of Mozart's most popular operas. Its themes of love, infidelity, and class struggle continue to resonate with audiences today.
