She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a violinist. Gencer's love for music was evident from a young age, and she began studying piano and singing at the Istanbul Conservatory when she was just 12 years old. Gencer's talent was quickly recognized, and she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy. She moved to Italy in 1950 and began studying with the famous Italian soprano, Giannina Arangi-Lombardi. Gencer made her operatic debut in 1951, playing the role of Santuzza in Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Gencer's career quickly took off, and she became one of the most sought-after sopranos of her time. She performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Gencer was known for her powerful voice, her dramatic intensity, and her ability to bring complex characters to life on stage. One of Gencer's most famous roles was that of Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth. She first performed the role in 1959 at La Scala, and it became one of her signature roles. Gencer's interpretation of Lady Macbeth was praised for its intensity and emotional depth, and she went on to perform the role in many other productions throughout her career. Gencer also had a great affinity for the works of Gaetano Donizetti, and she was known for her performances of his operas. She performed in many productions of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and her interpretation of the role of Lucia was considered one of the best of her time. Gencer also performed in many productions of Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux. Throughout her career, Gencer received many awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1962, she was awarded the title of "Kammersängerin" by the Austrian government, and in 1979, she was awarded the title of "Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic" by the Italian government. Gencer was also awarded the "Légion d'honneur" by the French government in 1985. Gencer continued to perform well into her 60s, and she retired from the stage in 1985. However, she remained active in the world of classical music, and she began teaching at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Gencer was known for her dedication to her students, and many of them went on to have successful careers in the world of opera. Leyla Gencer passed away on May 10, 2008, at the age of 79.
