He was the son of a lawyer and a pianist, and he showed an early interest in music. He began studying piano at the age of six and later studied composition and conducting at the Milan Conservatory. Gavazzeni made his conducting debut in 1930 with the Milan Symphony Orchestra, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor. He was known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians and for his attention to detail. He was also known for his deep knowledge of the music he conducted, and he was often called upon to conduct difficult and complex works. In 1939, Gavazzeni was appointed the principal conductor of the La Scala opera house in Milan, a position he held for over 20 years. During his tenure at La Scala, he conducted many of the great operas of the Italian repertoire, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Rossini. He was also known for his interpretations of the works of Wagner and Richard Strauss. One of Gavazzeni's most famous performances was his 1953 production of Verdi's "La Traviata" at La Scala. This production, which starred Maria Callas in the lead role, is considered one of the greatest performances of the opera ever recorded. Gavazzeni's sensitive and nuanced conducting helped to bring out the emotional depth of the music, and his collaboration with Callas was legendary. In addition to his work at La Scala, Gavazzeni was also a frequent guest conductor at other major opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of the operas of Verdi, Puccini, and Rossini are still considered some of the best ever made. Gavazzeni was also a composer, and he wrote several operas and other works during his career. His most famous work is his opera "Antigone," which premiered in 1958 at La Scala. The opera, which is based on the Greek tragedy by Sophocles, was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it remains one of Gavazzeni's most enduring works. Throughout his career, Gavazzeni received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1955, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and in 1960 he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1979. Gavazzeni continued to conduct and compose music until his death on February 5, 1996, in Milan, Italy.
