The opera was first performed on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, Italy. The plot of "Tosca" is set in Rome in 1800, during the Napoleonic Wars. The story revolves around the singer Floria Tosca, her lover, the artist Mario Cavaradossi, and the corrupt police chief Baron Scarpia. The first act of the opera takes place in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, where Cavaradossi is painting a portrait of Mary Magdalene. Tosca arrives to meet him, and they sing a duet expressing their love for each other. The sacristan interrupts them, and they hide as Scarpia and his men arrive in search of an escaped political prisoner. Scarpia suspects that Cavaradossi is hiding the prisoner and orders his men to keep an eye on him. In the second act, Scarpia invites Tosca to his quarters, where he tries to seduce her. When she resists, he threatens to have Cavaradossi executed unless she gives in to him. Tosca agrees, but as soon as Scarpia signs the order for Cavaradossi's execution, she stabs him to death. In the third act, Cavaradossi is brought to the roof of the Castel Sant'Angelo to be executed. Tosca arrives and tells him that she has killed Scarpia and that they can escape together. As they prepare to flee, Cavaradossi is shot and killed by the firing squad. Tosca, realizing that she has been betrayed, jumps to her death from the roof. "Tosca" is known for its dramatic intensity and powerful music. The opera features several famous arias, including "Recondita armonia," "Vissi d'arte," and "E lucevan le stelle." The music is characterized by lush orchestration, soaring melodies, and emotional intensity. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own distinct mood and musical style. Overall, "Tosca" is a powerful and emotional opera that explores themes of love, betrayal, and political corruption. It remains one of Puccini's most popular works and is regularly performed in opera houses around the world.More....
