He was the youngest of seven children and grew up in a family of farmers. His father was a lover of music and often sang Neapolitan songs, which inspired Giuseppe to pursue a career in music. At the age of 16, Giuseppe moved to Milan to study singing at the Conservatory of Music. He made his operatic debut in 1946 at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, singing the role of Des Grieux in Puccini's Manon Lescaut. His performance was well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young tenors in Italy. In 1947, Giuseppe made his debut at La Scala in Milan, singing the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. His performance was a huge success, and he was soon invited to perform at other major opera houses around the world. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London in 1948, singing the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème. He also made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1948, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Giuseppe continued to perform at major opera houses around the world. He was particularly known for his performances in the operas of Verdi and Puccini, but he also sang in works by Mozart, Donizetti, and other composers. He was known for his beautiful voice, his passionate performances, and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. One of Giuseppe's most famous performances was in the 1955 film version of Verdi's La Traviata, directed by Luchino Visconti. Giuseppe played the role of Alfredo, opposite Maria Callas as Violetta. The film was a huge success, and it helped to bring opera to a wider audience. Giuseppe received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1953, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of the highest honors in Italy. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1969. In 1997, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to classical music. Despite his success, Giuseppe's personal life was often troubled. He was known for his temper and his difficult personality, and he had a reputation for being difficult to work with. He was also involved in several scandals, including a 1973 incident in which he was arrested for soliciting a prostitute in New York City. In 1990, Giuseppe was involved in a serious car accident in which he suffered severe head injuries. He was in a coma for several months and was left with permanent brain damage. He was unable to perform after the accident and spent the rest of his life in a nursing home in Milan. Giuseppe di Stefano died on March 3, 2008, at the age of 86. He was remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century, with a voice that was both powerful and beautiful. Despite his personal troubles, he left behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and recordings that continue to inspire and move audiences today.More....
