He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a singer. Zaccaria began singing at a young age and was encouraged by his parents to pursue a career in music. Zaccaria studied at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he trained under the guidance of Maestro Riccardo Stracciari. He made his operatic debut in 1947 at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in the role of Colline in Puccini's La Bohème. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. Throughout his career, Zaccaria performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in London. He was known for his rich, resonant voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. One of Zaccaria's most notable performances was in the role of King Philip II in Verdi's Don Carlo at La Scala in 1958. His portrayal of the troubled monarch was praised for its depth and nuance, and it cemented his reputation as one of the finest basses of his generation. Zaccaria also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing in recitals and with orchestras around the world. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Over the course of his career, Zaccaria received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1961, he was awarded the prestigious Viotti d'Oro prize for his performance in Verdi's Attila at the Teatro Regio in Turin. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1974. Zaccaria continued to perform well into his seventies, and his final performance was in 1997 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He passed away on June 24, 2007, at the age of 84. Throughout his career, Nicola Zaccaria was celebrated for his powerful voice, his dramatic intensity, and his unwavering commitment to his craft.
