He was the son of a wealthy merchant and was raised in a musical family. His father played the guitar and sang, and his mother was a pianist. Tosti's musical education began in Naples, where he studied at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella. He studied composition with Saverio Mercadante and singing with Vincenzo Lombardi.
