Giuseppe de Luca was an Italian baritone opera singer who was born on December 25, 1876, in Rome, Italy. He was the son of a blacksmith and grew up in a working-class family. De Luca showed an early interest in music and began singing in church choirs as a child. He later studied at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he honed his vocal skills. De Luca made his operatic debut in 1897 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome, where he sang the role of Silvio in Ruggero Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci." He quickly gained a reputation as a talented singer and was soon performing in major opera houses throughout Italy. In 1902, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, where he sang the role of Marcello in Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème." De Luca's international career began in 1903 when he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where he sang the role of Figaro in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." He also performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for the first time in 1915, where he sang the role of Rigoletto in Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto." Throughout his career, De Luca was known for his powerful voice, impeccable technique, and dramatic stage presence. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini operas, and he was considered one of the greatest baritones of his time. De Luca's most famous roles included Rigoletto, Scarpia in Puccini's "Tosca," and the title role in Verdi's "Falstaff." He also sang in the world premieres of several operas, including Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West" and Umberto Giordano's "Siberia." De Luca received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1920, he was awarded the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce by the Italian government for his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy and the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. De Luca retired from the stage in 1930, but he continued to teach and mentor young singers.
