Giovanni Martinelli was an Italian tenor who was born on October 22, 1885, in Montagnana, Italy. He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a singer. Martinelli showed an early interest in music and began singing in the church choir at a young age. Martinelli's talent was recognized early on, and he began studying music at the age of 12. He studied with various teachers, including Giuseppe Mandolini and Giuseppe Borgatti. He made his professional debut in 1910 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, singing the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème. Martinelli quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading tenors of his time. He was known for his powerful voice, impeccable technique, and dramatic interpretation. He performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in London. One of Martinelli's most famous roles was that of Radamès in Verdi's Aida. He performed this role over 400 times during his career and was considered one of the greatest interpreters of the role. He also performed in many other Verdi operas, including Otello, Il Trovatore, and La Forza del Destino. Martinelli was also known for his performances in Puccini operas, including La Bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. He was particularly renowned for his interpretation of the role of Cavaradossi in Tosca, which he performed over 200 times. In addition to his opera performances, Martinelli was also a successful concert singer. He performed in many concerts and recitals throughout his career, including a famous concert at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. Martinelli received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1926, he was awarded the title of Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia by the Italian government. He was also awarded the title of Commendatore della Corona d'Italia in 1932. In 1950, he was awarded the title of Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana. Martinelli retired from the stage in 1950, after a career that spanned over 40 years. He continued to teach and mentor young singers until his death on February 2, 1969, in New York City.
