Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Otello' is based on William Shakespeare's play 'Othello'. The opera was composed between 1884 and 1886 and premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887. The libretto was written by Arrigo Boito, who also collaborated with Verdi on his previous opera, 'Falstaff'. The plot of 'Otello' revolves around the Moorish general Otello, who is appointed as the governor of Cyprus by the Venetian Republic. Otello is deeply in love with his wife, Desdemona, but his ensign, Iago, harbors a deep hatred for him and plots to destroy his marriage and career.
