Role:Conductor PerformerBirth:May 28, 1916 in New York City, NYDeath:August 4, 2008 in Viterbo, ItalyGenre:OperaNicola Rescigno was a renowned Italian-American conductor and opera director who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on May 28, 1916, in New York City, to Italian immigrant parents. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music from a young age. Rescigno's family moved to Italy when he was a child, and he began studying music at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. He studied piano, composition, and conducting, and he graduated with honors in 1938. After completing his studies, Rescigno worked as a répétiteur at the Rome Opera House, where he gained valuable experience working with some of the world's most renowned conductors. In 1940, Rescigno returned to the United States and began working as a conductor and pianist for the Metropolitan Opera. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor, and he was soon conducting performances at the Met and other major opera houses around the world. One of Rescigno's most significant accomplishments was his role in the revival of bel canto opera in the 1950s and 1960s. He worked closely with soprano Maria Callas, conducting many of her most famous performances, including her legendary 1958 performance of "Norma" at La Scala in Milan. Rescigno was also instrumental in bringing the works of Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini to a wider audience, conducting many of his operas in the United States and Europe. In addition to his work with bel canto opera, Rescigno was also a champion of contemporary music. He conducted the world premieres of several operas, including Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Consul" and Samuel Barber's "Vanessa." He also worked with many other contemporary composers, including Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, and Aaron Copland. Throughout his career, Rescigno received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1960, he was awarded the Italian Order of Merit for his work in promoting Italian culture abroad. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, and he received an honorary doctorate from DePaul University in 1991. Rescigno continued to conduct and direct opera productions well into his 80s, and he remained an influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on August 4, 2008, at the age of 92. His legacy lives on through the many recordings and performances he conducted, as well as through the many musicians he mentored and inspired throughout his long and illustrious career.More....
