Italo Tajo was a renowned Italian bass opera singer who was born on April 25, 1915, in Pinerolo, Italy. He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist. Tajo's love for music was evident from a young age, and he began singing in the church choir when he was just six years old. Tajo's formal music education began at the Turin Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of Luigi Ricci. He made his operatic debut in 1937 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, where he played the role of Colline in Puccini's La Bohème. Tajo's performance was well-received, and he soon began receiving offers to perform in other operas. In 1940, Tajo made his debut at La Scala in Milan, where he played the role of Sparafucile in Verdi's Rigoletto. This performance marked the beginning of Tajo's international career, and he soon became a sought-after bass singer in Europe and the United States. One of Tajo's most notable performances was in 1948, when he played the role of Leporello in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival. His performance was widely praised, and he was invited to perform at the festival for several years thereafter. Tajo also had a successful career in the United States, where he performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He made his debut at the Met in 1950, where he played the role of Colline in La Bohème. Tajo's performance was well-received, and he soon became a regular performer at the Met. Throughout his career, Tajo performed in a wide range of operas, including works by Verdi, Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti. He was known for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. In addition to his successful career as an opera singer, Tajo was also a respected voice teacher. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria in 1963. Tajo retired from performing in 1976 but continued to teach voice until his death in 1993. He was remembered as one of the greatest bass singers of his time and a respected teacher who had a profound impact on the world of classical music.
