He was the son of a shoemaker and grew up in a working-class family. Bechi showed an early interest in music and began singing in church choirs as a child. He later studied at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he honed his vocal skills. Bechi made his professional debut in 1936 at the Teatro Verdi in Florence, where he sang the role of Marcello in Puccini's La Bohème. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented singer and was soon performing in major opera houses throughout Italy. In 1939, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, where he sang the role of Germont in Verdi's La Traviata. During World War II, Bechi continued to perform despite the difficult conditions. He sang for Italian troops stationed in North Africa and also performed for Allied troops in Italy. In 1943, he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned for several months. After his release, he resumed his singing career and became one of the most popular opera singers in Italy. Bechi's international career began in 1947 when he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where he sang the role of Rigoletto in Verdi's opera of the same name. He also performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang the role of Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca.
