Don Carlo is an opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle. The opera was first composed in French and premiered at the Paris Opera on March 11, 1867. The Italian version of the opera was premiered at La Scala in Milan on January 10, 1884. The plot of Don Carlo is set in the 16th century, during the reign of King Philip II of Spain. The story revolves around the love triangle between Don Carlo, the son of King Philip II, Elisabeth of Valois, his fiancée, and Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, Carlo's friend. The opera also deals with the political and religious conflicts of the time, including the Inquisition and the conflict between Spain and the Netherlands. The opera is divided into five acts and includes several notable musical movements, including the famous aria "O don fatale" sung by Princess Eboli in Act IV. The opera also features a number of duets and ensembles, including the duet between Don Carlo and Rodrigo in Act II and the quartet in Act III. One of the characteristics of Don Carlo is its use of historical characters and events. The opera includes several real-life figures, including King Philip II, his wife Elisabeth of Valois, and the Grand Inquisitor. Verdi also uses music to convey the emotions and conflicts of the characters, with the music becoming more intense and dramatic during moments of conflict and tension. Overall, Don Carlo is considered one of Verdi's greatest operas, with its complex plot, memorable music, and powerful themes of love, politics, and religion.
