Artist Info
Genre:OperaThe Rome Opera Theater Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Rome, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1880 as the Orchestra del Teatro Costanzi, and it has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Italy and the world. The orchestra's founding can be traced back to the opening of the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1880. The theater was built by the impresario Domenico Costanzi, who wanted to create a world-class opera house in the heart of Rome. To achieve this goal, he assembled a group of talented musicians to form the orchestra that would accompany the theater's productions. Over the years, the orchestra has undergone several name changes, reflecting the changing ownership and management of the theater. In 1926, the orchestra became known as the Orchestra dell'Opera di Roma, and it has retained this name ever since. The Rome Opera Theater Orchestra has had many talented musicians over the years, but some of its most notable members include conductor Tullio Serafin, who led the orchestra from 1913 to 1944, and conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1951 to 1953. The orchestra has performed many memorable concerts and operas over the years, including performances of Verdi's Aida, Puccini's La Bohème, and Rossini's The Barber of Seville. One of the orchestra's most famous performances was its 1951 production of Tosca, which was conducted by Gavazzeni and starred Maria Callas in the title role. In addition to its performances at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the orchestra has also toured extensively throughout Italy and the world. It has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Rome Opera Theater Orchestra has received many awards and accolades over the years, including the Premio Abbiati, which is awarded by the Italian Association of Music Critics to the best Italian orchestra of the year. The orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to the preservation and promotion of Italian opera, and it has been awarded the title of "Ambassador of Italian Culture" by the Italian government. Despite its long and storied history, the Rome Opera Theater Orchestra remains a vital and active ensemble, continuing to perform and record new works and classic repertoire. Its commitment to excellence and its dedication to preserving the rich tradition of Italian opera have made it one of the most respected and beloved orchestras in the world.More....
