He began performing in public when he was just eight years old and gave his first solo recital at the age of ten. His performances were met with critical acclaim, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young musicians of his generation. In 1938, Gino enrolled at the Milan Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. During World War II, Gino served in the Italian army, but he continued to play the piano whenever he had the opportunity. After the war, he resumed his studies at the Milan Conservatory and graduated with honors in 1946. Gino's career as a professional musician began in earnest in the late 1940s.
