Born on December 8, 1962, in Lannion, France, Bavouzet began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Pierre Sancan and won first prize in piano performance at the age of 16. Bavouzet's career took off in the 1980s when he won several international competitions, including the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1986. He quickly established himself as a leading pianist, performing with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Bavouzet's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by classical and contemporary composers. He has a particular affinity for the music of Debussy, Ravel, and Haydn, and has recorded complete cycles of their piano works. He has also recorded works by Bartók, Prokofiev, and Messiaen, among others. One of Bavouzet's most notable performances was his interpretation of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in 2009. The performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and sensitivity. Bavouzet's recording of the concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra was also highly acclaimed, earning him a Gramophone Award in 2011. Bavouzet has received numerous other awards and honors throughout his career, including the Diapason d'Or, the Choc de la Musique, and the International Classical Music Award. He was also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2003. In addition to his performing career, Bavouzet is also a respected teacher and has given masterclasses at institutions around the world, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York. He is currently a professor of piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich.
