Ben Gernon is a British conductor who has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting and dynamic young conductors of his generation. Born in 1989 in the town of Hereford, England, Gernon showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the trumpet and began studying conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Gernon's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was awarded the prestigious Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2013. This award provided him with the opportunity to conduct the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival, which was a major highlight of his early career. Since then, Gernon has gone on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Aldeburgh Festival. One of Gernon's most notable performances was his debut with the BBC Proms in 2015, where he conducted the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Gernon's ability to bring out the best in the orchestra and his skill in interpreting the music. Gernon has also been recognized for his work in promoting contemporary music, and has conducted many world premieres of new works by leading composers. In 2017, he conducted the world premiere of Mark Simpson's "The Immortal," a work for orchestra and solo clarinet that was commissioned by the BBC. In addition to his work as a conductor, Gernon is also a passionate advocate for music education and outreach. He has worked with many youth orchestras and music education programs, and has been a guest lecturer at several universities and conservatories. Gernon's talent and dedication have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, he has received the John Carewe Conducting Award, the Norman Del Mar Conducting Fellowship, and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Salomon Prize. Looking to the future, Gernon shows no signs of slowing down. He has a busy schedule of performances and recordings planned, and is sure to continue making a name for himself as one of the most exciting and innovative conductors of his generation.
